AKHA Speaker Gets Vote of Confidence from Former LG Chairmen

Members of Forum of Former Elected Local Government Chairmen in Akwa Ibom State, have expressed satisfaction with the performances of the Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Onofiok Luke since his assumption of office.

They made this known recently when they paid a courtesy visit to the Speaker at the Assembly Complex.

Speaking through their chairman who is the Former Chairman of Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, Hon Godwin Ekpo, the group said “We are satisfied with your performances so far as the Speaker of the 6th Assembly, we are not disappointed because you have rebranded the legislature in the state”.

The group noted with satisfaction the way the Speaker as been able to stabilized the politics of the state through what they described as his advocacy role since he became the number 3 citizen of the State.

“We feel delighted that you have been able to stabilized the politics of the state through your advocacy programs, you’ve made this state proud”.

The group which is made up of former elected chairmen from 1999 on the platform of PDP thanked the Speaker and members for supporting the Governor and giving him the enabling environment to deliver on his campaign promises and stressed that the 6th Assembly has given voice to the voiceless.

On his part, former chairman and former member representing Ukanafun in the State Assembly, Rt Hon Aniekan Akpan said he was surprised that the Speaker has been able to rebrand and give the complex a new look within one year as Speaker even with the limited resources accruing to the Assembly.

“We are proud of you Mr Speaker, for what you’ve been able to do in just one year in office. We have seen tremendous change and renovation in the House”.

In his remarks, the Speaker, Rt Hon Onofiok Luke thanked members of the Forum for their contributions towards the emergence of Mr Udom Emmanuel as Governor in the last governorship election and urged them to continue supporting the Governor for him to deliver on his campaign promises.

He used the opportunity to thank the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP for giving them the platform to serve the State and appealed to members of the forum who are yet to be accommodated politically in the present administration to be patient as their duty as the people representative is to advocate on behalf of those who do not have voice.

Commenting on the relationship that exist between the Akwa Ibom State Executive and the Legislature, Hon Luke said they were elected to serve and not to fight the executive saying that “the vibrancy of the legislature is seen by how much you are able to relate with executive to deliver on its campaign promises to the people and  how you can attract development”.

He also stressed that the 6th Assembly is committed to the Akwa Ibom project and promised that they will step up their legislative function, lawmaking and oversight functions.

On Governor Udom Emmanuel’s performances since assumption of office, the Speaker said the Governor has performed creditably despite the dwindling economy.

In appreciation of the Speaker’s leadership style and stability in the Assembly, the group passed a vote of confidence on the Speaker and members of the Assembly.

The motion which was moved by Dr Charles Mbong and seconded by Pastor Sunny Ibuot was supported by all members present.

In attendance were former chairmen from all the local governments in the state elected from 1999 till date.
