In a bid to restore Unity Park from its current state of abuse to its original plan, the Akwa Ibom State Government has revealed plans to remodel the park to meet the taste and yearnings of Akwa Ibom people.

The Akwa Ibom State Government made its plan known today through the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Rt Hon Victor Antai when he took newsmen and men of his Ministry on the spot assessment of the park.

Hon Antai who expressed displeasure over how the park has been transformed into grazing field, football field, refuse dump, driving school and hideout for hoodlums among other vices noted that plans are underway to change the narrative of the park into what is obtained in developed climes but not diverting from its original plan.

He said to ensure the Ministry’s goals are achieved, they had received several presentations from various outfit on how to restore the park to a state of the arts park which will in the same vein meet its original purpose.

He said  “there have been several presentations and in all the presentations so far one outfit has met our aspiration. I can tell you that the redesigning of this park to meet the taste of the people and its original purpose is in place.”

While explaining what led to the recent demolition of structures used for businesses  in the park, the Commissioner pointed out that such business operations had led to the abuse of the park especially as it relates to the degradation of its natural environment.

While dispelling rumours alleging that the operators of the business premises were not adequately informed before the demolition took place, Hon Antai stressed that the operators were served notices. He however added that most of operators refused to evacuate the premises while some resorted to using those he described as  political fathers to pressurize him to suspend the plan which he said he resisted.

He added “Just like Governor Udom do say that you cannot have omelets without breaking an egg, we have to stop misusing this park. We are taking over this park for it to meet the purpose which it was created.

“We are trying as much as possible to reposition Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria and we will make sure before December our story will be different.”
