Major stakeholders of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area consisting present and past political office holders, elder statesmen, women and youths, last Thursday unanimously passed an overwhelming vote of confidence on the State Governor, His Excellency Udom Gabriel Emmanuel and also declared their total support the governor’s reelection come 2019.
In his welcome address, the convener of the stakeholders meeting and the member representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon. Otobong Ndem noted that Mkpat Enin is very relevant to the politics of the State and as such, Governor Udom Emmanuel is ensuring that Mkpat Enin is well-carried along in his government.
The lawmaker, while enumerating the various projects which the present state government has brought to Mkpat Enin, assured the people that the governor is keen on bringing more people-oriented projects to the area and called on the people to sustain the current tempo of support to the governor till the end of the administration and in 2019 when the governor will be seeking a re-election.
He further urged the people to embrace peace, unity and togetherness as nothing tangible or positive can be achieved through strive and disunity, adding that as the highest political office holder in the area, he will do everything within his power to bring peace and unity to Mkpat Enin.
Declaring the meeting open, the chairman on the occasion and the State Commissioner for Ministry of Rural Development, Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Ekong Sampson said that the times have changed and that the people of Mkpat Enin must change with the times by moving from discussing politics to discussing polices that are capable of attracting development and progress to the area.
Barr. Ekong Sampson noted that the various projects like the road constructions, Coconut Refinery and Power sub-station which Governor Udom Emmanuel has brought to Mkpat Enin will provide opportunities for the people of the area to be actively and gainfully engaged as well as bring numerous economic and social benefits to the area. He therefore urged the people to key into the projects.
The former lawmaker further said that considering the relevant and prominent role Mkpat Enin plays in the politics of the State, there is no reason why the area should not be great, emphasizing that the only thing capable of truncating the development and growth of the area is disunity and called on the people to come together and join hands to mover the area forward.
While commending Governor Udom Emmanuel for his magnanimity, Barr. Ekong Sampson said that since politics is a game of interest and the governor has proved that he has the interest of Mkpat Enin at heart, the people of Mkpat Enin must reciprocate through their support to the government in order to enable the government do more for the area.
On her part, the transition committee chairperson of Mkpat Enin, Lady Ekaette Usip assured that Mkpat Enin people will not relent in their support for the governor. She noted that Mkpat Enin has fared well under Governor Udom Emmanuel in terms of appointments and other dividends of governance and urged other leaders and stakeholders in Mkpat Enin to always put the unity and progress of the area first before any other interest.
Highpoint of the meeting was a motion to pass a vote of confidence on Governor Udom Emmanuel and declaring the total support of Mkpat Enin to the governor’s reelection come 2019. The motion, which was moved by a former local government transition chairman, Hon. Ubong Ekefre, was seconded by a former PDP chapter chairman, Chief Friday Ayara. The stakeholders also issued a communiqué where they expressed their position on various issues.
Among the stakeholders who attended the meeting are; a former House of Assembly member, Rt. Hon. Udobong Ekpo; immediate past local government chairman, Hon. Ephraim Akpan; immediate past PDP chapter chairman, Hon. Nkereuwem Akai; members of the local government transition committee; past local government chairmen and many others.
