CODAF Takes Tree Planting Campaign to Schools in Delta
… Establish Tree planting Club in Omavovwe Secondary School
A Non-Governmental Organization, Community Development Advocacy Foundation (CODAF) also known as Rural Community Empowerment Initiative (RUCEi) has extended tree planting campaign to students of Omavovwe Secondary School, Agbarha-Otor, in Ughelli North local government area of Delta State.
The NGO through their project tagged “A Million Tree” (AMT) project visited the school on Wednesday, June 1, 2022.
In his remark, the Executive Director of Community Development Advocacy Foundation, Benin Richard noted that the organisation is embarking on the one million tree planting with students in order to inculcate environmental education to children and youth at the early stage of their lives.
Richard offered insight to the fact that children and youths constitute a large population that could influence the environmental behaviour of their parents and schools.
He said that the strategy of the organisation would among other things assist children and youth to understand the consequences of human activities on the earth and its resources.
The CODAF boss commended the students and the teachers for their enthusiasm in the project urging them to cascade the experience in their communities.
Also Speaking, the Executive Director of Africa Center for Environment and Rural Development (ACERD), Nohwo Fred (a partner of the A Million Tree Project) explained that the exercise was to make children understand the need to live in harmony with nature for sustainable development.
According to Fred, the only way to ensure sustainable development is to catch the children young and get them to be aware of the environment, love it and take up the responsibility to take care of it.
In response, the principal of Omavovwe Secondary School, Mr. Onojeje, thanked the team for their timely intervention in mitigating the effects of climate change and also improving the quality of the environment.
He promised to give all the necessary support to CODAF and its team, to ensure the sustainability of the AMT School Project.
In all, 30 tree seedlings were planted with the Principal, Mr. Onojeje, making the ground breaking planting of the first tree seedling. Others including teachers, students and the team members took turns to plant a tree.
Meanwhile, 55 students have shown interest and willingness to be part of the “A Million Tree School Project Club” by requesting for the membership form.
The forms were distributed by 3 teachers, who are automatic matrons and guardians of the club in the school.
