Male Feminist Network Launched in South-South to Promote Gender Equality

The Male Feminist Network (MFN) has officially been launched in Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River States (Cluster 2) to promote gender justice, and inspire men to become allies in the fight for gender equality and the elimination of gender-based violence.
The launch which took place on Friday in Uyo was carried out by Youth for Change Initiative (YOFCI) with support from Value Rebirth Empowerment Initiative and the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development (Centre LSD).
The launch brought together stakeholders who said they are poised to redefine masculinity and promote gender justice. The flag off which has also taken place in Delta, Bayelsa and Edo State known by the group as cluster 1 is anchored by Comrade Edewor Egedegbe.
The Executive Director of YOFCI and Cluster 2 Coordinator of MFN, Peace Edem said that the network is not just a project, but a movement of conviction and transformation.
He said the initiative seeks to build a community of enlightened men who promote gender justice and challenge harmful norms that stir inequality and violence.
The Coordinator 2 said the network will also lead advocacy, mentorship, and community engagement to drive cultural and behavioral change, and support policies and systems that ensure women and girls live in dignity and equality.
He said the network plans to engage men and boys in communities, schools, and workplaces, to promote healthy masculinity and challenge harmful gender norms. They will also work with policymakers and influencers to advocate for laws and policies that promote gender equality and protect women’s rights.
Edem pointed out that over the years, gender equality has been seen as a “women’s issue” but explained that it is actually a human issue that requires the involvement of men. “Every man has a woman he loves; a mother, a sister, a wife, a daughter, or a colleague. Yet, in our society, these same women face daily struggles of inequality, exclusion, and abuse,” Edem said.
The Coordinator 2 called on men to join the fight for gender equality, saying, “We are calling on men to be protectors, not perpetrators; partners, not oppressors; voices of reason, not silence.”
While inviting those he described as young or old, rural or urban, political or traditional to join the network, he said that empowering women does not threaten men, but strengthens families, communities, and nations.
Edem noted that with the launch of the network, a new generation of male champions who will promote gender equality and challenge harmful norms will emerge.

He added ‘”Let us be the generation of men remembered for choosing empathy over ego, respect over dominance, and justice over silence.
To all the women here, thank you. Your courage continues to inspire us. To our partners, the media, and supporters, your role is invaluable. The story of equality must be told, amplified, and sustained.
” May this press briefing mark the dawn of a new era. An era where men rise, not to control, but to collaborate; not to dominate, but to defend; not to silence, but to speak until every woman and girl in Nigeria can live free, safe, and equal.
Together, let us build a just and inclusive society”.
Also speaking, President, Male Advocate Unit of Gender Based Violence Management Committee in Akwa Ibom, Anietie Bassey (Esq) called on the media to deepen its role in shaping a positive narrative for gender equality and justice.
He said, ”I am of the firm belief that it is a greater duty of the media, to create awareness on gender equality and change the mindset of men positively on embracing these healthy co-existence.”
In his goodwill message, the Senior program officer of Abundant Word of Faith Foundation, Usoro Peter commended the initiators of the project.
While describing the initiative as worthy to be reckoned with, he said people from all walks of life must be committed to eliminate gender-based violence and discrimination in the workplace, church, families and communities as well.
He added. “We shall be intentional to lead advocacy, mentorship, and community engagement that would support policies that ensure women and girls live in dignity and equality.”
