Bundesliga Re-starts With Excitement As Awoniyi Hits One For Mainz 05

The much talked about resumption of the German Bundesliga as the first league in Europe took the centre stage over the weekend with games played in different centres but without the excitement of spectatorship except on TV.

The side attraction of the week’s duel was a fantastic goal scored by Nigerian substitute Taiwo Awoniyi who salvaged Mainz 05 by scoring a goal against FC koln to restore parity for the visitors who were trailing with a goal deficit.

Awoniyi on loan from Liverpool came on after 56 minutes from the bench to draw level after Cologne were 2 goals up courtesy of Mark Uth from the penalty spot on six minutes and Florian Kainz in the 53rd minute to mark his seventh game since joining Mainz in the 61st minute.

Awoniyi who was on the bench, came on in the 56th minute for his seventh league outing and began the comeback when he scored in the 61st minute before Pierre Kunde made it two in the 72nd minute.

In their first meeting of the season, Mainz who trailed by 3-1 came from a goal down to win. Mainz are 15th on the table with 27 points, with four points away from the relegation play-off spot.
