First Phase of FG/Novone Affordable Social Housing Estate Completed in Uyo

By Ekemini Simon

The first phase of the Federal Government Affordable Social Housing Estate in Uyo has been completed with sales ongoing.

The first phase of the project is 50 units of semi-detached bungalows of 3- bedroom flat ensuite.

The Social Housing Estate which  is located at Ikot Ntuen village, opposite University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, has taken a new shape after completion of the first phase of the project which is accompanied with provision of state-of-the-art utility infrastructures.

The Social Housing Estate is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) project between the Federal Government and Novone Consult. In the partnership, Novone Consult is to construct the houses and manage the estate while the federal government provides the utility infrastructure.

When select journalists led by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Ita Enang, visited the Estate on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, this reporter observed utility facilities provided to include mark-adamized roads with drains on both sides within the estate, industrial borehole with treatment plant and reticulation to houses, generating set which would power the estate, four fire hydrants, electric transformers, state-of-the-art landscaping with gardens and CCTVs.

According to the Principal Partner of the project, who is the Managing Director of Novone Consult, Arc. Ezekiel Nya-Etok , said other facilities that will soon be provided include solar power and fibre optics for steady internet connectivity thus making the estate a place where one can live and work.

The Principal Partner said the Federal Government wants the estate to be a model of what an estate should be like hence the commitment to providing quality utility infrastructure.
He noted that although the land was given by the State Government during the Obong Victor Attah’s administration, he was glad that when the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola sighted the documents of the proposed project, he pushed to provide sustainable housing through the PPP model he initiated.

Nya-Etok added ” We can say with every sense of responsibility that the Federal Government has set out to give Nigerians an idea of what a home should be like through this partnership. What makes it sustainable is because they will do only a part and I will do the other part. And because of my private initiative to ensure that I recover my money, we will make sure that everything will work at all times.

” That is the PPP concept the federal government is bringing in. When it is successful, they can replicate it in other areas. Phase 1 is where we have 50 numbers of semi detached bungalows and all rooms ensuites. Even at phase one, the federal government has completed infrastructure for phase two and three.”

The Principal Partner stated that Civil servants can get the house at N8.5 million while the public can access at N15 million.

He noted that already the Federal Government is working with the Federal Mortgage Bank to ensure a percentage of the estate is owned by civil servants at a subsidized rate.
Nya-Etok added that those who are contributors to the National Housing Fund also have a greater chance of owning a house in the estate depending on their period of repayment in line with their years of service left.

Addressing journalists, Senator Ita Enang said the Affordable Social Housing estate is just one of the several projects embarked upon in the Niger Delta by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

He said when the projects are finally brought to the fore after completion, it will amaze many.
The Presidential Aide added ” It became necessary for us to see that what President Buhari does is like what China did; locking up China and when it was time to unveil, it was unveiled in an amazing way. This is just a tip of the projects President Buhari has carried out in South South.

” This is a PDP controlled State government but this is what President Buhari through the Federal Ministry of works and Housing is doing in Akwa Ibom State, an Housing Estate which is accommodating Akwa Ibom and none Akwa Ibom people.”
