LG election: Group petitions Gov Emmanuel over zoning in Esit Eket

A group that goes by the name, “Esit Eket Grassroot Mandate” has petitioned the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Udom Emmanuel over “an attempt by some stakeholders of PDP to scuttle the zoning principle of the area enacted by agreement on June 21st 2002”.

In a petition signed by comrade Paul Edohoaqua, President and Ndifreke Umoh, publicity secretary, the group pointed accusing fingers on the current Chairman of Council, Hon Iniobong Robson for “selfishly seeking for a third term against the age long system of zoning” thereby brewing an atmosphere of crisis which may lead to break down of law and order if not checked now.

“Your Excellency sir, we have abiding faith in you as a listening father and a product of zoning. We are writing this petition to you hoping that you will call Mr Iniobong Robson, the executive Chairman of our local government area who, despite repeated admonitions not to scuttle the zoning principle, is arrogantly bent in contesting for a third term, to the detriment of the entire organized system”, the letter read.

The petition went further to explain that in 2002, a 40 man zoning committee headed by Chief S. B. Akansi, arrived at a working document which stated that, “in a bid to ensure political stability and peaceful co-existence, Esit Eket local government area of Akwa Ibom State has opted for political zoning system”.

“The committee which drew four members each from the 10 Wards of the local government area had recommended zoning system and the division of the local government area into three zones namely, Zone A to have Wards 1.2.3. Zone B to comprise Wards 4.5.6,9 while Zone C to have Wards 7.8 and 10”, the letter read.

Elaborating further, the group said that Mr Iniobong Robson who is from Zone A has completed the turn of his zone and should by December this year or whenever the local government election is conducted, hand over to a candidate from Zone B, adding that instead of Mr Robson to be satisfied with his tenure, he wants to embark on tenure elongation.

“We will not fold our hands and allow the selfish ambition of one person to truncate the peaceful co-existence of Esit Eket people. The ambition of the arrogant Chairman is not worth the spilling of innocent blood, which may likely occur if he fails to listen to the good counsel of Esit Eket people”, they said.

The petition mentioned those who witnessed the signing of the zoning arrangement to include Elder Benji Udobia, Mr Usoro Akpanusoh, Chief Akansi, Hon Ime Idiyang, Chief Victor Inuaeshiet, Mr Ayanga E. Ayanga, Elder Samuel I. Akadu, Elder O. D. Ekong, Chief Okokon Edukere, Mrs Ime Ben Essien, Mr Okon Umana and Barrister Bassey Essien among others.
