Barring any last minute change of mind, the Governor will appoint the General Overseer of God’s Own Ministry International located at 21 Akpan Essien Street, Uyo, Rev. (Arc) Ime Ekpo to take over from Mr. Ephraim Inyang as the new Commissioner for Works.
The Nsit Ubium-born Pastor is currently serving as Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources in the State Executive Council.
Akwa Ibomites remember the 64-year old reverend gentleman as the Commissioner who infamously ordered the demolition of structures on Christmas Day of 2019. The affected structures located at Nung Oku were said to be on government land.
The demolition elicited widespread outrage from Akwa Ibom residents via media, especially social media platforms, with many accusing Ekpo and the government in general of insensitivity which rendered a lot of people homeless during the yuletide.
“The Governor wants someone who is the opposite of the outgoing occupant of that office in terms of temperament. He wants someone who will settle down to work without creating much enmity, fuss and buzz. Apart from that, the governor knows that Arc. Ekpo has the capacity to deliver. Amongst all the serving commissioners and new nominees, he is the only one who comes close to being well versed in civil engineering. He has been a career civil servant and played a part in the designs of the Shelter Afrique. He is a core professional”, a source who is an influential figure in the current administration told TheMail.
“He is equally one of the Udom Inoyo’s men in the exco. And with 2023 governorship in the picture, if you are blessed with a discerning spirit, you may also decipher why he is being sent to the juicy ministry”, the said hinted.
The governor is swearing-in members of his cabinet on Monday, August 3, 2020. 8 new commissioners will be sworn in, while at least 6 old ones will make way. Ephraim Inyang who in recent weeks has been the Supervising Commissioner in the Ministry of Works will totally relinquish the office for the incoming substantive commissioner. He will now concentrate fully on his role as the governor’s Chief of Staff. Udo Ekpenyong who left his position as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs will officially assume office as the new State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP on Monday.
Commissioner for Education, Prof. Nse Essien had already quit office to take up a role at Akwa Ibom State University, AKSU as the new Vice Chancellor.
3 other commissioners namely; Dr. Dominic Ukpong of the Health Ministry, Dr. Iniobong Essien of Science and Technology and their counterpart in the Environment and Petroleum Ministry, Dr. Ekong Sampson would all make way for the fresh nominees from their LGAs. The new nominees taking up the slots of their LGAs are Hon. Frank Archibong (Eket), Comrade Ini Ememobong (Ibiono Ibom) and Prof. Eno Ibanga (Mkpat Enin) respectively.
