Nobody owns NDDC – Gov. Wike assures

The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike last Tuesday stated that no tribe or region can claim ownership of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, saying that the commission belongs to all the state of the region.
Governor Wike stated this when the Interim Sole Administrator of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Mr. Efiong Okon Akwa paid him a courtesy at the River State Government House.
The Rivers State Governor however solicited for robust support for the new NDDC boss, saying that the tasks before the intervention agency are enormous. He however regretted that that the positive changes in the commission did not take place before now and commended Mr. Akwa for being different in his scheme of things.
In his words, “Governor Wike observed: “NDDC does not belong to any ethnic group in the Niger Delta region. Those who are seeing themselves as the owners of NDDC are mistaken. They leave their states and come to Rivers State to block NDDC gates.

Wike warned that such attitude must stop, sounding a note of caution: “Nobody should take our tolerance for granted.”

He stated: “NDDC belongs to the people of the Niger Delta. No particular group should arrogate powers to themselves. The commission is owned by all the states of the Niger Delta region. The talk about people not coming from the core Niger Delta is not tenable. We must have to stop that kind of thinking.”

“We should not allow ex-militants who come under the cover of amnesty to be determining what happens in the Niger Delta region. We should not allow people to come to the region to intimidate us. They cannot be allowed to come from their states to block roads in Rivers State. It is somebody from Niger Delta that will be appointed to head NDDC and he can come from any of the states. It is not the birthright of certain states.”
Earlier in his address, the Interim Sole Administrator of NDDC, Mr. Efiong Akwa said that he has a single mission of actualizing the primary aim of creating the NDDC, which he said is to remodel the entire oil producing regions. He noted that his visit to the governor was to create a synergy between the Rivers State Government and the commission where visible development could be attracted within the possible shortest of time.
The NDDC boss, however use the opportunity to congratulate the governor on his achievements in distributing projects evenly across the entire state. He further commended the governor for the constructing the Eastern By-pass where the newly completed NDDC head office is located.
