University Don Calls On Govt To Partner Writers On National Development

A Renowned professor of English, in the department of English, Anambra State University (Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwo University, Anambra State) Prof. Ngozi Chuma -Udeh has called on Nigeria government to partner with creative writers in moving the country forward, as they are the windows that propel the nation towards development.
Professor Ngozi made the called during the 10th Biennial Conference on English language and Literature, organized by the Department of English, University of Uyo with the Theme : Language, Literature and Social Responsibility, held at Onyeama Ugochukwu hall last week.
Pro. Chuma-Udeh, who is the Dean Faculty of Arts, Department of English, Anambra State University described Nigerian writers as the fabrics of national development because of their intrinsic roles they played in the society.
She explained that, writers are the custodians of people’s culture, who have the power to provide the society with accurate reflection of itself, of its inconsistencies and predicaments.
” At every stage in the national history, literature stands out as an integral part of the people’s struggle and it has always concerned itself with mirroring the societal historical experiences, Nigerian writers are full observers, agitators and participants in the ever evolving social political happening in the society “.
Declaring the conference open, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Enefiok Essien (SAN) commended English Department for always gathering intellectuals to brainstorm and chat a new course thereby expanding the knowledge base of students and offering them opportunity to ask questions apart from their regular classroom routine.
Essien who was represented on the occasion by prof. Anthonia Essien, Dean faculty of Arts explained that, any writer who distance self from the happenings and politics of his society is indirectly killing the society because they are expected to foster National development through their all encompassing profession.
On his part, the Acting Head, Department of English University of Uyo, Dr. Ubong Josiah applauded the University boss for his supports and visionary leadership as well as the enabling environment they have in hosting the conference.
He said the tenure of professor Essien has brought unprecedented transformation into the institution.
Dr. Josiah further stressed that language is a tool that can integrate the Nation, break barriers and foster development if well communicated. He noted that the department under his watch will continue to bring in professionals in training and retraining of students for optimum productivity.
The event also featured presentation of University of Uyo journal of English language and literature (UUJEL) by professor Luke Eyo and award presentation to some personalities on their landmark achievements and contributions in the educational sector.
