Zero Waste Ambassadors inaugurated in Uyo

…Akpayak Community to be first beneficiary

Environmental Rights Action in collaboration with Friends of the Earth Nigeria (Era/FoEN) has inaugurated  Zero Waste Ambassadors in Uyo.

The inauguration was held on Thursday, at Policy Alert Office in Uyo.
Speaking during Occasion,  The coordinator of project Mr Ubrei-Joe Mariere, said the project is being implemented in Akwa Ibom and Edo state with a mission to setting up grassroots structure that will result in better waste management in the Niger Delta. 

“ZeWA is meant to build a platform for local engagement and advocacy between local communities, waste managers and relevant stakeholders.

“The Mission is to build a platform which will critically examine how to have communities to attain zero waste in the environment with a vision of building a  community without waste,” he said. 

Benin and Uyo have been chosen to be the pilot cities and Akpayak Community in Uyo(Wellington Bassey Way/Uyo Village Road) is to be the first beneficiary since there is already a dumpsite there.

He stated that ZeWa intends to partner relevant government agencies and bodies to help in actualization of zero waste in the Niger Delta.

He hinted that Zero waste academy will be fully inaugurated on the 29th of October 2021, where various stakeholders would be drafted into the project meant to last for 12 months with possible extension.

The meeting had in attendance representatives from Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Muslim Community which is seen as the major propagators and role players in the society, Members of Waste Management Agencies and other government representatives who were part of the event.
