2025 Children’s Day: CPN calls for Increased Investment in Child Protection, Social Services in Akwa Ibom

As the world prepares to celebrate the 2025 Children’s Day on May 27, advocates for Children’s rights, Child Protection Network Akwa Ibom State Chapter has called on the government of Akwa Ibom State to deepen its effort in protecting and promoting the rights and welfare of children in the State.
This call was made by the organization in a press briefing held in Uyo on Wednesday to commemorate the 2025 Children’s Day with the theme ” Our Future, Our Responsibility”.
According to the Child Protection Network (CPN) Coordinator, Mr. John Umotong, key issues affecting children in the State revolve around education, child protection and health.
The organization noted that they have observed dilapidated school structures in rural communities and inadequate funding of education explaining that these affect conducive learning environments and hinder access to quality education.
On the concern in child protection, CPN said children in the State remain vulnerable to abuse, neglect, and exploitation. They called on parents, guardians, and stakeholders to join forces in protecting children’s rights and not leave the duty for government alone.
On healthcare, the group said access to healthcare services is crucial for children’s well-being hence there is a need for government’s increased investment in healthcare infrastructure and services.
The Organization said if the problems must be addressed, there is a need for collective responsibility. They called for collaboration between relevant government agencies, civil society organizations, and stakeholders in advancing children’s interests.
They noted that communities must be engaged in promoting children’s rights and welfare.
Commenting on the role of government, CPN said governments must prioritize children’s needs, ensuring adequate budgeting and planning for their welfare.
The organization called on the government at all levels to effectively implement policies and laws protecting children’s rights.
They added ” We urge the government to increase investment in education, healthcare, and child protection services.
We call on parents, guardians, and stakeholders to prioritise children’s needs and protect their rights. We commit to working together to create a safe and nurturing environment for children to thrive.”
