Isoko Development Union inaugurates Environmental Monitoring Committee
The Isoko Development Union (IDU), an umbrella organisation of one of the largest ethnic nationalities in Delta State, has established a committee to monitor the environment within the Isoko domain.
The committee members as announced and inaugurated by Prof. Chris Akpotu are: UBREI-JOE, Maimoni Mariere as Chairman, Dr. (Mrs) EDEWOR Akpezi Okiemute as Vice Chairman, Mrs. OKIRORO-OTUAGA Praise Ejiroghene as Secretary. Other members of the committee are Mr. ENIGHENO Collins, Mr. ARIGHAKPO Kingdom, Mrs. AKENI Tina Ewomazino, Mrs. Bright Esther Oke, Mr. OBIBI Onamakowho Endurance, Hon. IDOVAH Levi and Mr. GRANDBALL Orerome Joel.
The committee was inaugurated during the 2021 Isoko annual general conference held at the IDU secretariat, Oleh, on Monday December 27, 2021.
Inaugurating the committee, the President General of the group, Professor Chris Akpotu noted that as the global climate is changing, it was time for the Isoko Community to be proactive thus ensure that the Isoko environment is not thrown into a state of environmental emergency especially as occasioned by the destruction of the Isoko environment by the oil industries, sand miners and loggers.
According to the President General, urgent environmental intervention is needed to assess the Isoko environmental integrity.
He said the need to have a proper documentation and comprehensive state of the Isoko environment is long overdue thus pointing out that the Isoko Environment Monitoring Committee is needed to drive the vision of a pollution free Isoko nation so as to leave the ecosystem in a more stable state for the next generation.
Prof. Akpotu stated that this will set a standard for everyone and corporations to live in harmony with the environment.
