Commissioning of “Mmong Patience Umo Eno” water project reinforces Akwa Ibom’s commitment to 2030 target- Governor’s Aide
The Personal Assistant to the Akwa Ibom State Governor on General Duties, Ambassador Ofonime Essien has commissioned a new water project christened “Mmong Patience Umo Eno” in honour of the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Patience (Kemi) Umo Eno.
The Commissioning which held yesterday at Ikot Ekpaw Village, Ikpa Ikono Ward 1, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area aims to provide safe and reliable drinking water to residents of Ikot Ekpaw village and environs, contributing toward Nigeria’s efforts to meet SDG 6’s first target of achieving universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030.
Ambassador Essien described the commissioning as far more than the unveiling of a borehole. He portrayed it as “the unveiling of a testimony, the expression of gratitude, and the celebration of a woman whose kindness shaped destinies.”
“Today’s event may appear as a mere project commissioning, but to me, it is far more profound. …this project is not just a borehole; it is a flowing symbol of her compassion, a reminder that, just like water, love should never run dry.”
She credited Late Pastor Patience Umo Eno with having belief in her potential and providing guidance which transformed his service-minded path. He said the new water infrastructure aligns with her pet project, the Golden Initiative for All (GIFA), in the area of environmental health and sustainable living.
Speaking at the launch, the Commissioner for Youth Development, Dr. Ekerette Ekanem, described late Pastor Patience Umo Eno as “a woman of substance whose values continue to inspire young leaders.”
He applauded the project as reflective of the ARISE Agenda’s focus on youth inclusion and meaningful service.
Also contributing, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Hon. ( Mrs. ) Emem Ibanga, emphasized the State Government’s belief in women’s capacity and commended Ambassador Essien for commemorating the First Lady’s legacy through a community service project that addresses safe drinking water that is a critical component of SDG 6.
Chief Bruns Ekpa-kiet,Chairman Caretaker Committee, Ikot Ekpaw Village, Mkpat Enin L.G.A expressed the community’s deep appreciation, committing to safeguard the facility and ensure its sustainability. The project was officially commissioned by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs in the presence of dignitaries, local residents, and community stakeholders.
In his Goodwill message, the Chairman of Mkpat Enin LGA, Hon. Emmanuel Inyang commended Amb. Essien for delivering clean water access, in memory of his late beloved sister.
He said that the project will address one of the largest global development gaps, which is access to safe water to the people in the rural communities.
Community-driven initiatives like “Mmong Patience Umo Eno” demonstrate how local leadership and targeted investment can help drive progress. As water becomes ever more central to health, development and dignity, projects such as this align with global norms and national priorities alike.
