The 2020 Easter Football League for teams from Ikpa Ubekwe Clan in Mkpat Enin local government area of Akwa Ibom state began on Sunday at the ALSCON football pitch, Ikot Abasi.
The tournament which comprises 10 teams from the communities namely Ikot Ubong fc, Ikot Okopoinua fc, Ata Udousung fc, Ikot Abasi Village fc and Ikot Essien fc. Others are Ikot Aba fc, Ikpetim fc, Ikot Etetuk fc, Utaewa fc and Ikot Akpanata fc will be played on a round robin basis and will end with the grand finale at the same venue on Easter Monday (April 13, 2020).
In a very explosive opening game, defending champions Ikot Obong played to a one all draw in a game that saw them throw away the lead in a15th minute equaliser to Unyime Moses in the second half after Mark Okono’s late first half strike in the first half for Ikot Okopoinua fc.
Speaking to newsmen at the end of the game, the sponsor of the tournament, Engr. Uwem Okoko who has floated the competition for the 6th year running apart from the yearly end of year football competition, said that his deep passion for grassroots football development and the desire to discover new talents have been his driving force while plans are under top gear to bring in foreign scouts to assess and pick raw talents for a career development in football.
Engr. Okoko thanked the players for being disciplined and promised an enhanced prize money and other mouth-watering incentives in this year’s tournament. The tournament will be played on a daily basis until the grand finale on Easter Monday.
