A Non-governmental Organisation, Innocent Udoidioing Foundation has donated 30 dual carriage desks to Secondary Grammar School, Upenekang, in Ibeno local government area.

The school has been in the news recently after an investigative report by TheMail Newspaper showed how many students of the school sit on bare floors to learn and write examinations.

About four weeks after the report, UK-based Akwa Ibom scholar and philanthropist, Innocent Udoidiong through his foundation donated the desks on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 to ameliorate the plight of the students.

Presenting the desks to the school authority, the Coordinator of the Foundation, Mr. Joseph Ekpo noted that the decision to donate the desks to the school stemmed from the investigative report that showed the dearth of seats in the school.

He said ” The Principal of this Foundation, Innocent Udoidiong had seen the sad pictures and report of students of this school seated on bare floors to write their examination. He was moved with sympathy. He made inquiries, and did need assessment.

Coordinator of the Foundation, Mr. Joseph Ekpo.

” He had to send down some funds for this to be done. We must say that we do not  present desks to secondary schools rather primary schools. But he saw the urgent need to do that in this situation hence these desks were donated today “.

The Coordinator called on the students to make effective use of the desks to enhance their academic performance and also charged public spirited individuals and organisations to support the effort of the government when need arises.

While noting that the foundation has recently donated desks to primary schools in Abak and Uyo, Ekpo assured that the organisation is poised to continue in its philanthropic gesture.

Responding, the School Principal, Emmanuel Akpan thanked the foundation for the donation noting that it will go a long way to address the plight of students who sit on the floor to learn.

He added ” Innocent Udoidiong I am told is a student. Yet, he has the big heart to do this. I pray to God to bless him. If he does this as a student, one can imagine what he will do when he finishes and returns to Nigeria.”

While thanking TheMail Newspaper for the Investigative report and Policy Alert which supported the investigation, the Principal assured that the school will take adequate care of the desk and use it effectively.

Earlier, the Executive Director of Policy Alert, Tijah Bolton-Akpan commended the organisation for the intervention.
