Isoko Nation To Hold Environmental Summit Dec 15
Leaders and stakeholders from Isoko ethnic nationality and Delta state, will on Friday gather at Isoko Development Union, IDU Secretariat, Oleh headquarters of Isoko South local government area for the Isoko People Environmental Assembly (IPEA).
The event is set to be organized by the Isoko Environmental Monitoring Committee (IEMC) and will launch the State of Isoko Environment report.
In a statement signed by Mr Maimoni Ubrei-Joe, and Mrs. Praise Okiroro-Otuaga chairman and secretary of the Isoko Environmental Monitoring Committee (IEMC), disclosed that the event is aimed to show insight on the environmental challenges facing the Isoko nation and outline a sustainable environmental practices in the Isoko region.
“With the summit, IEMC will apply an investigative approach adopted by the committee in assessing the state of the Isoko environment and the responsibility for a safe environment should not be left to the government alone.
“The Isoko people as one of the smallest ethnic groups in the Niger Delta region and they are endowed with significant oil and gas reserves and their predominant livelihood are centered on persistent farming of cassava, groundnut, maize, okra, and yams.
“The Isoko Environmental Monitoring Committee will present its recommendations in the form of the Isoko People’s Environmental Manifesto to policymakers.
“IEMC was established in 2021, and it will employ a participatory research approach on the cases of oil and gas pollution, sand dredging, deforestation, coastal erosion, and flooding incidents.” the statement reads.
