SHADEF Calls for House Planting of Flowers Across Nigerian Homes
…Holds House Planting Exhibition

Safe Space Development Foundation ( SHADEF) a non-governmental organisation with the focus to combat climate change and protect the environment has called on all Nigerian homes to uptake the practice of house flower planting.
The organisation said house planting of flowers makes one more energetic, more relaxed, happier and healthier.
SHADEF made the call on Saturday, January 14, 2024 in Uyo the Akwa Ibom State Capital while holding a house planting exhibition in celebration of the House Planting Week mostly observed in Australia from January 8 to 14.
The exhibition which was spearheaded by the Executive Director of SHADEF, Miss. Evelyn Eyo witnessed the reuse of plastic waste for flower vessels showcasing how house planting of flowers could be done.
In an interview during the exhibition, one of the team members, the Communications Lead for Social Media, Miss. InyeneChrist David said the organisation is undertaking the exhibition in accordance with one of its mandates; Climate Education thus advocating and educating the public on the need for House planting.
David said the advantages of house planting is to boost the aesthetics of the environment, improve the air quality, and to enhance healthy living by bringing harmony between ecosystem and mother nature.
She recommended flowers that should be planted to include those that repel snakes, reduce the weakening of the skin due to its potency in increasing the air condition of the environment coupled with Sun produce flower which she noted increases high oxygen rate in any environment and reduces carbon dioxide.
The Communications Lead noted that in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, some of these flowers can be found around IBB Avenue and Nsikak Eduok Avenue for purchase.
David added ” Humus soil is advised to be used when planting because it retains water and even if you add a little fertilizer it grows. However, in house planting, little or no fertilizer is advised to be used. There should be constant spraying of water but not too much water is encouraged”.
The Communications Lead assured that SHADEF will continue to keep advocating for house planting in Nigerian homes especially with the utilisation of plastic waste stressing that it contributes to mitigating against climate change and enhancing healthy and aesthetic living.
