AKSU: Seyang Resigns, paves way for Nse Essien to emerge as VC

The Pro Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University, Engr. Samuel Inyang (a.k.a Seyang) has resigned. This was made known on Tuesday, July 28 by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem through a press statement.

“Following the stepping aside of Engr. Samuel E. Inyang, OON, Pro-Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), His Excellency, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has approved the appointment of Distinguished Senator Udoma Udo Udoma as the Pro-Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University, Ikot Akpaden. The appointment takes immediate effect”, the SSG’s statement reads.

No reason was given by the state government for the resignation of Engr. Inyang who is the owner of Seyang Construction Company.

But TheMail learnt on good authority from credible government sources that Seyang’s resignation is to pave way for Prof. Nse Essien to emerge as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the varsity. Nse Essien who is currently the Commissioner for Education is from Ikot Ekpene LGA, same as Engr. Samuel Inyang.

“There is no way the VC and the Pro-Chancellor would come from the same LGA.  For some months now, there have been intense pressure on Seyang to resign but he had rebuffed. He has finally bowed to pressure by resigning. So, before the governor swears in his new state executive council members, Nse Essien would most likely be appointed VC barring any last minute change of mind”, said our source.

We learnt that the new Pro-Chancellor, Senator Udoma who is automatically the Chairman of the Governing Council of the school, after conferring with other members of the council would soon send the list of the VCship nominees to the governor. Essien is expected to make the list and it is widely believed that the governor would settle for him.

Meanwhile, the governor surprised interested parties and keen watchers of the internal politics of AKSU over his choice of former Budget Minister, Senator Udoma as Seyang’s replacement.

It is understood that former National Assembly members, Senator Effiong Bob and Rt. Hon. (Chief) Nduese Essien were some of the names considered for the AKSU top job.
