Forgery case: Question marks on WAEC’s letter to police confirming Umo Eno’s certificate, discrepancy spotted
Question marks have been put on the new document filed in court by the gubernatorial candidate of PDP, Pastor Umo Eno in the ongoing battle bordering on alleged certificate forgery.
Eno through his legal team had last week filed in court, copy of a letter said to be from the Ikeja Zonal Office of the West African Examination Council (WAEC). The letter dated August 8, 2022 is addressed to the Nigerian Police Force, Department of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The letter which was signed by Dr. Amos Dangut, Deputy Registrar/Zonal Coordinator disowned the April 8, 2022 letter from the same zonal office, addressed to The President, Association for Advancement of Democracy in Nigeria (AADN) which Akan Okon relied on to prove his case.
The April 8, 2022 letter from the WAEC zonal office in Ikeja signed by T. A. Ademola of the exams and records unit had earlier stated that Umo Eno’s result “with certificate No. PO 275678A for candidate No. 15725119 of December 1983 submitted for certification by you does not exist in our records, hence we cannot certify what we did not issue”.
Checks by TheMail Newspaper shows that the candidate and certificate numbers in the WAEC’s April 8, 2022 letter tallies with the numbers in the Pastor Eno’s 1983 certificate while that of August 8, 2022 does not.
Further checks by TheMail Newspaper shows that in the August 8, 2022 letter from WAEC obtained by Umo Eno bears certificate number SG699413 and Candidate number 15520230.
While the certificate number in the latest letter is that of Bassey Umo Eno who wrote WASSCE in 1981, the candidate number does not tally with what is imprinted in Umo Eno’s 1981 and 1983.
Chris Tari Endeley, a Chief Superintendent of Police attached to Akwa Ibom State Command who is said to have carried out investigation into the certificate forgery allegations had last week tendered the August 8 letter from WAEC to the court.
He is expected to enter the witness box on Tuesday, September 20, 2022 and will be subjected to cross-examination by the lead counsel of the plaintiff, Okey Amaechi, SAN.
Both parties are disputing the authenticity of the letters tendered in court.
